Voltar's Newbie Webmaster Resource

Page Optimization

We discussed in the last section about BW management, and that your gallery should burn not more than 1 gig per 10K visitors. If you are burning more that, you may want to pay special attention to this section. For those of you who can handle 15K or more traffic with 1 gig BW, you are probably doing the right things.

If you are burning too much BW, the first thing to look at is your number of banners and their sizes. I see a lot of gallery using two or more large banners that will certainly burn a lot of BW. If you want to use 2 banners, each should be under 15K. If you have a larger size banner that you want to use because you know it pulls, then try using just one banner, and substitute the other with a text link. In fact, text links not just saves you money on BW, if used effectively, text links could pull in more sales than a banner.

For newer webmasters & beginners, I would recommend each thumb to be about 2K, and your full size pics to be each 25 - 30K. If you are not sure about your pic size, or if you don't know how to compress them properly, you can go back to the webmaster resource and read the articles about pic compression. This is very important especially for beginners who are operating on a small budget and tgping for the first time. It's always good to learn from your own mistakes. But it's even better to learn from somebody else's mistake. I have had days that I've burned 10 gigs and no sales. And I hope it does not happen to you.

As a webmaster becomes more familiar and comfortable with TGP traffic and is making sales consistently, one will be ready to venture into submitting to the majors for heavier traffic, as well as improvising the subjects discussed here according to one's skill level. There are many variations in a page's layout, and there are many possibilities. There are times when higher BW costs may actually mean more profits. However, always start with the basics, and start making some money first, before venturing into the unknown.

Happy $elling!
