VNWR Glossary

AFFILIATE An internet business that promotes the website of another internet business for a commission on sales.
APACHE
WEB SERVER
A software package that serves webpages to the internet that uses Unix like operating systems.
ASP Active Server Pages. Microsoft NT or Win2000 server extention used for interactive web pages.
AVS Adult Verification System. A system that charges a fee, usually provided by a third party, to verify the age of surfer that wants to view adult content on the internet buy way of credit cards.
BANNER An advertisement that links to a website that promotes a business, product or service. A banner may have graphics, text, or both.
BBW Big Beautiful Women     Contributed by Jennifer
BLUR An additional browser window that opens behind the current browser window on the surfers computer. Webmasters can control many options, including size and the tool bar.
CGI Common Gateway Interface. Scripts, usually writtten in Perl or Php, that allow the webmasters to create interfaces between the surfer and the webpages they are viewing.
CJ Circle Jerk. Using popups and blurs, the webmaster forces browser windows to appear until the surfer exits to a sponsor.     Contributed by LadyB
CLICK
THRU
A surfer that clicks a link on your website to go to another website.
Co-LOCATION A server that you own, that is located at the webhost place of business.
DEDICATED
SERVER
A server that you can rent, or lease, that is provided by your web host to serve only your domains and webpages to the internet.

DIRTY
SITE
A website created to force surfers browser to perform in a way not intended by the surfer. Example: Blurs, Popups, Adding websites to favorites, Reseting Home Page.
DNS Domain Name Server. A process that translates Domain Names to IP address's.
DOMAIN
NAME
A unique name for your website that is registered with an agency licensed to keep track of the names and who they belong to. Example: www.yourdomain.com
EXIT
TRAFFIC
All surfers that left a website that didnt click on a sponsor link.

FREE
SITE
A website that surfers can view without purchasing a membership.
FREE
WEBHOST
A webhost that will serve your webpages to the internet for no charge.
FTP File Transfer Protocal. FTP programs transfer files to and from servers from a desktop computer to a server.
HTACCESS A text file that gives a webmaster limited control of a Unix type server for the purpose of redirecting browser requests made by the surfer for files or images.
HTML Hyper Text Markup Language. Used to create webpages.
HUB A webpage that has links to all of your other webpages.
IP
ADDRESS
Internet Protocal Address or URL (Universal Resource Locator) assigned to every computer on the internet in the form of four octets 111.222.333.444 to form a class C ip address.
JAVA
SCRIPT
A individual, or several lines of code that inhance the basic html code that will add functionality to webpages, such as interfaces with the surfer.
LINUX An open source operating system based on Unix.
LL Link List. A website that will post your URL for the purpose of sending you traffic.

MEMBERSHIP
SITE
A website that surfers must join before they can view the contents.
MIRROR
PAGE
A little bit of a mis-nomer. It is not an exact duplicate of a page. A mirror page is usually a copy of an entrance page(index.html) that is designed with minor changes, but all mirrors are linked to the same or different pages on the same website.
NICHE A speciality website providing only content to a specfic fetish. Example: amateur, teen, mature, gay, or lesbian.

PAID
HOST
An company that serves your webpages to the internet for a fee.
PHP A programming language similar to perl that is gaining in popularity.
PERL The most common programming language used on the server side to perform tasks that handle various interactions between the server, the surfer, the system admin, the webmaster and a website.
RAW
CLICK
Every click that is counted for everytime a surfer clicks on a link.
RECIP A link that you post on your website to another website in return for the other website posting a link to your website. The link can be a graphic, text, or both.

SPONSOR An internet company that pays you a commission or fee for sending surfers to their website.
SSH A program similar to Telnet but sends out encrypted packets instead of plain text.
SSI Server Side Includes     Contributed by LadyB
SUBMIT Giving the URL to your website to another website for the purpose of getting your website listed on that website.
TELNET A program that is used to connect to a server. Once a you have logged on you can operate the server(if you have permission)as if you were sitting at that server.
TGP Thumbnail Gallery Post. A website that lists links to a websites that provide content in the form of galleries.

THUMBNAIL
PICTURE
GALLERY
A website that provides a preview of larger pictures by resizing the picture to smaller size so that many pictures can be displayed on a webpage with clickable links to the larger picture.
TRAFFIC Generic term for all surfers that move from one website to another.
UNIQUE
CLICK
A click that is counted from every new surfer that clicks on a link.
URL Universal Resource Locater. This is the line that is typed into a browser to locate a website. Either by the fully qualified domain name (www.foo.com) or by its IP address (111.222.333.444).
VIRTUAL
HOSTING
A company that serves your webpages, and the webpages of other customers, from the same server. The apperance is such that every domain and the domains webpages are served from its own server.

WARNING
PAGE
The first page of a website the surfer arrives at warning of adult content.
2257 Relates to the federal law that requires proof of age documentation of a model photographed, either in still or moving pictures, engaged in sexual acts.
404
PAGES
Generic term for pages the surfer is directed to because of any server errors. Example: File not Found(404) error.
