Glad to help...

But, you should frequent this board more often...

relax, take your shoes off... ya'll come back now, ya hear :)

-----

I will try. There are tons of tutorials I want to do just to see if how I do them is different then most people. Been in this biz over 4 years now, and it is always interesting how much you can still learn about the things you do every single day.

thanks for trying, but I know that code won't work. The problem is that players such as realplayer and windowsmediaplayer don't send ANY referral info, so you have no idea off of referrals whether the person came from your domain or another one.
*****************************************

I think that was why Merlin was saying the only sure way was the password protection... I posted the cookie method below....

You could do a login script and make them give you an email address to gain access to the flicks, then the blank referer htacces would keep out sites hotlinking and give you a chance to gather some email addys :)

Ok, put this script between the <head> and </head> on the page with links to movies:

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="javascript">
// Calculate the expiration date
var expires = new Date();
expires.setTime(expires.getTime() + 6 * 60 * 60 * 1000);
document.cookie = "id=valid; path=/" + "; expires=" + expires.toGMTString();
</SCRIPT>

Put the movies in their own subdirectory and put this .htaccess in that subdirectory with the movies:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://([a-z0-9-]+\.)*your-domain.com/ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_COOKIE} !(^|(.+;)*)id=valid(;.*|$)
RewriteRule /* http://%{HTTP_HOST}/ [R,L]

That code is from someone else who was kind enough to post it at some point on another board.
Thanks to El Presidente for sending on the link where it could be found!

pd -

You're just joking with us, right?

I see no licensing information.
I see no indication 2257 documentation even exists.
On a freehost with a yahoo address. Even if I were silly enough to pay your asking price which is 1000-2500% too high, I WOULDN'T DARE USE THOSE PICS ON MY WEBSITE.

Even if you provide me the necessary documentation, there's no back trail - how do I know if it's real or not?

Learn the basics of the business, sure, but learn the basics of being a content provider. Anyone buying from your current setup is asking for a whole lot of trouble in a very big way.

Hi Zoink....

I know that the movie issue and htaccess has been discussed around here before... Hmmmm...

This might help... from the archives:

**********************************************
I was challenged one day to come up with an htaccess file for one of my favorite customers, not naming names... but she hangs out here :)

She wanted to prevent someone from hotlinking her movies.... This is tricky.

For one, windows media doesn't send an http referrer to the server.

Basically, when the video is clicked on, the browser passes the request to windows media player. Windows media player then in turn sends the request to the server.

The only sure fire way to protect your movies from unauthorized viewing is to password protect the directory. However, you can prevent someone from hotlinking the movies on their web site.

WARNING - TEST THIS BEFORE USING - USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?xxx-domain.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !=""
RewriteRule /* http://%{HTTP_HOST}/ [R,L]

This htaccess file should be in your movies directory. Nothing else should be in this directory :)

Each line should not be wrapped :)

Have fun with it, and please remember to test!!!

There you go... the secret is out of the bag :)

PD, hi, me again :)

It also helps to get your stuff listed in the SEs... I did a google against your url(s) and there is currently no listings for any pages that contain them, so apparently you have not submitted, or you have not been spidered, or you have no one linking to your site...

Building traffic takes a while....

If you have any problems understanding anything I have written, then I would strongly suggest you go visit the newbie quick start guide up above these posts... look for the glossary....

while you are at it, take a look through the info there, great stuff on basic site building, etc... that will help you build a more professional presence on the net....

btw, welcome to the board PD :) Hope you stick around and learn something :)

PD....

first of all, I am pretty sure that the powers that be will view your post as SPAM and will pull it pretty quick... We have sponsors around here who sell content and they pay for the right to put their url out on the board.... You didn't so your message will probably go bye bye...

Secondly... Get off of the freehost...

Thirdly... Presentation, yours leaves much to be desired... If what I saw is what you have for sale, I wouldn't buy it, for the same price I can anywhere from 5-10 nice sets in 1024 or higher...

Fourthly... The whine factor

Fifthly... Oh, why go on..lol...

Put your stuff onto a real host, research what other folks are doing so you can see what the industry standard is.... Price accordingly...

If you are going to sell it exclusive, then you need to shop to the paysite owners, most of us are freesite and tgp builders... We would love to have exclusive content, but it usually isn't worth it...

Learn the industry...

get your own domain...

hope that helps

Afternoon All :)

Hope everyone is having a good start to the week. Busy day here...unfortunately not on porn! Just getting started on that...finally...lol.

Welcome Brian! Good for you for coming out of the shadows! We don't bite...USUALLY! LOL!

Hi there PD :) Hmmm...really tough to say, but we do have some content providers who frequent this board...perhaps they can give you some better advice.

That said, I'm sure free hosting doesn't instill a lot of confidence in webmasters who are looking at your content. And while the pics appear to be pretty nice, $2/image is a bit on the steep side in my experience. I did only look at one set however...don't know if your pricing is that high across the board.

Personally, don't think I'd pay that price to someone using free hosting though :( Just doesn't have a very business like feel to it...sorry :(

Hey there OT...nice to see you up and about :) Did you get my mail a few days ago?

Hi Brian!

I figure about ten thousand visitors a gig. I used to figure about twenty thousand a gig, but a higher proportion is hitting graphics-heavy sites these days.

Jojasa and I do entirely softcore (or fetish or BDSM) for freesites. Premium AVS sites are a different story.

The whole purpose of your site is to harvest, channel, feed traffic into the best ways of extracting revenue from that traffic. Give 'em all they want for free is NOT the way to extract revenue! So whatever the niche is, you're reminding them of their hunger, and pointing them to where they can get the whole thing NOW, with instant access :)

Hi, All!

My name is Brian, and I am a newbie. I have spent the last 3 weeks lurking, reading the Newbie Guide and archived issues of the DFN Weekly, learning HTML, and planning out my initial sites and projects. First of all, I want to thank you all for the incredible info you post here daily, and thank Voltar for making such a great resource as VNWR available.

I do have a couple of questions that I would love to hear from ya'll on:

1) I had originally signed up for a free host, but it has become very apparent to me that I should go ahead and start with paid hosting. I am looking at one of the M3Server virtual hosting packages that comes with 10GB of bandwidth. Is this enough BW for a newbie? Is there a rule of thumb for figuring out how many visitors equals 1 GB of BW?

2) I have also started content shopping. I have read repeatedly to tease 'em with softcore and make 'em pay for the hard stuff. That makes good sense to me. I can see where softcore would be great for certain niches such as amateurs, mature, big boobs, etc. What about things like facial or gangbang sites? Do I want to balance softcore pics with some niche-specific harcores pics? Do I keep it all softcore? Should I shoot for an escalating series of pics, starting with softcore and gradually building toward hardcore, hoping to build a state of excitement in the surfer to motivate him/her to click on through? My head just spins with the possibilites! I thought the best thing I could do before buying the content is to ask the experts here on the board.

I appreciate any thoughts on these two issues, and look forward to submitting my first site for your review in the next week or so!

Thanks in advance,
Brian

At the moment I'm just redirecting everything to the domain index page so it doesn't get lost...

I will add a nasty trap for the more serious error messages & probably keep the less serious ones bouncing to the index or main page.

El Pres - Yes it's quite likely the shopkeepers were having me on. But I was having fun :)

Yes I did read all the way back on his coinage history. I had a general idea of groats, farthings, crowns, and guineas from English literature, but I now see my general idea was sometimes off! Nor had I understood Catalan to be a distinct language and culture, but that's a different story :)

When I drink (which is not real often) I tend to do shots of Tokillya (straight from the bottle type so each shot is a bit bigger) with a beer chaser :) I still can't quite remember all of New Years 2002.... But the change with money from pounds, shillings and pence was in 1971, when everything else went decimal.

That's a great page, El Pres! I'd never quite figured out nineteenth-century British coinage. Now I have a much better idea of what's what :)

My problem with tequila is that there comes a time where I should stop and go back to drinking beer, if I do that I'm fine. But there is a thin line between that time and the screw it stage of tequila. I always seem to reach that time and say screw it, down goes another shot, and I....well...I'm in for pain, one way or another, I'm gonna be hurting the next day. LOL

Thanks El Presidente de Nada!

I think, then, the one-pound coins were still considered new at the time, having been introduced in the last 2-3 years. Also, in conversation people were *referring* to prices in shillings and pence. I'd look at my handful of coins, and none of the coins said 'shilling' on it.

Even getting this far was a step forward. The price would actually be stated as something like 'sixteen five and three'. Come to think of it, that's why I always had such a pocketful of coins. 'sixteen five and three' meant I could hand over a 20-pound note or a couple of tens and accept what change was returned. :)

London's got some great names for tube stations, areas and roads.
There's a road near Fenchurch Street Station called 'Crutched Friars' always wondered what the history of that one was, it's near the tower of London, so maybe it was something to do with that.

Old Tom

In 1982 the word ‘new’ was dropped from penny coins and two new coins were introduced – the 20 pence and the gold coloured one pound coins.
got that from here.

I do recall buying a bag of hot chestnuts from a street vendor near Hamleys Christmas eve or perhaps the day before. All I could do was hold out a handful of change and let him pick out what he required!

Nor could I adequately pronounce the name of the subway station I was trying to buy a ticket for. But I was able to carry a Tube map, point to it, and produce enough currency to buy the ticket. I could communicate Yes and No accurately enough... I can *read* English, but sure can't pronounce it!

Boo,
Sambucca's good stuff, gotta light it though with the coffee beans in the top, mmm.

hehe Donald yep tequila is dangerous stuff.
last time I had a serious session I actually started dancing in public, and that's a big no no.

Voltar,
If I serve up food I demand that people concentrate on the food, hehe.
There's loads of internetcafes in this city already, most of them seem empty alot,
& the type of people who go to internet cafes are not the type who want quality food,
they want mcdonalds/pizza crap.

If I make a pizza its with a sundried tomato sauce, fresh buffalo mozerella,
roasted romany peppers, fresh basil, italian ceps, air cured acorn fed ham and serious lugs of quality oliveoil,
it would cost them about $10 a slice! hehe.

Was there perhaps a new design for the pound coin in the early or mid 1980's? I'm sure *something* changed concerning the coins; now I'm curious to know what it was!

I think the pound came out before 1985, im not sure but I never remembers no shillings or whatnot and I was alive then hehe, allthough very small hehe

lemme check to see what it says on the pound coins...

the earliest pound coin i have on me was made in '82, but I have a feeling it was before then aswell

Yep Voltar ive thought about this but i dont think it would work still, the street is packed with loads of fast food restaurants all of which are too cheap for an amateur to setup and compete against :(

The place would have to be HUGE to make any real turnover, I know others that have tried to setup a internet cafe on the street and have seen them close down a few weeks later LOL

boo..there is a principle that you might be missing...
in marketing, have you ever noticed that mcdonalds, burger kings/queens, taco bells, and other fast food places are right next to each other?
the reason for this is that by one building next to the other they get 1/2 of the busines of the other..and people who like theres as well....and both places benifit in the long run from it...
something to think about :)
jsut offer a different food/drink base and boom you are in :)

afternoon all..

Hi Bruce!
welcome to VNWR!
and yes HTML good..FP bad.. :)
no software has been made yet that wil hold up to the way we work it in the hardest working industry on the net, the adult industry..
and you should know the code your business is built on :)
good question..you approached it in a very business like manner..very nicly done!

hi Cindy!
Thanks!

el pres..why not open an internet cafe shope..that way you cover both things :)

christyB...yea the 404 errors pages are set up by you unless you are on a free shots..which i know you not, but others may be...
you can get a nice bit of traffic running thru them if you "bait" the surfer a bit..by putting in an empty subdirectory in the misdt of a url..and when they peek in it..by makeing the url shorter in thier browser....boom redirected :) no page there....it is an alternate traffic source :)

ahh, tequila, love it. But I can only drink it when I am alone. It's the only drink that gives me that 10'tall& bulletproof state of mind. Last time I drank it was a couple years ago, one shot led to another, another. Then some guy reached pased me trying to collect his drink, bumped me a little. Well some friends took me home and put me on their couch. LOL woke up to look in the mirror and find that guy had used my head as a battering ram. LOL Leave it to me to screw with the biggest guy in the bar.

It was nice that FP does a lot of the little things for you but takes many steps to get there.
Guess I better do some reading on HTML.

Bruce,
Yep Donlads got it.
For our sort of pages, raw html is far better to use, less code means a quicker loading page, cheaper to serve and no mess ups with the helpful add on that FP adds.

Donald,
Yep JD is a great drink, I tend to stick to vodka or tequila now though,
in the freezer with shot glasses.
But I don't really drink spirits that much.

I've read about some of the US microbrewers, good stuff, shame they don't get the shelfspace in the supermarkets/bars.

Hi Bruce! Most will tell you to lose FP, it adds way to much useless, code and makes your pages heavy, which= to long to load. It's best to code by hand, you can eliminate useless code, and have absolute control of what your pages do.
That's just my humble opinion, and it was the first thing I was told when I came here, and they were right. :-)

Good morning Old Tom, looks like you're feeling better. I'm glad to see it. :-)

El Pres, the U.S does have some good beers, but you won't find it by going to the grocery store or mainstream bars/pubs. The good ones here are micro-brewed. We have a brewery/bar here in town, that makes a brew simular to a few German beers that I've tasted, but is'nt quite as heavy. Very good taste. But then with me, I don't really drink it too much for the taste. LOL
And as I was once told, if you can't find a good beer, buy a bottle of jack. hehehe

Hi All,
I have a question that I am sure can be answered by someone in here.
I have found this to be a very informative place for info.
I am designing my first web pages and was wondering if there is an advantage or disadvantage to designing them in front page 02 or by regular html coding. I am practicing with both but front page seems to use a lot more coding to display a page. Is this good or bad?
Any Help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Old Tom,
You haven't been to the UK since I was born, hehe.
I think the switch to decimal was 1971.
I was born in 72.

Decimalization has never really worked though,
2/3rd of the population still think in feet and inches, the road signs are still in miles and we use pints.

They passed a law a few years ago that you had to put prices and weights in kg, but people still ask so how much is that per pound.

The only reason they switched petrol to litres from gallons was because it looked too scary to have the price up in gallons.

One of the errordocument directives doesn't allow a full url. I think it's the 401. That means do something like this:

ErrorDocument 401 /authdenied.html

Full details available at apache.org - and this all assumes you're running the Apache server software.

Old Tom (Vice President)
Message # 94512 200.210.226.130 Mon Apr 21 11:51:25 2003

El Pres - I haven't been to the UK since they went to decimal currency, so that could explain the food impression. You do make things sound good!

ChristyB - the 'ErrorDocument' lines you listed should be all you need. I highly recommend using *different* destination pages for the different error codes. The codes have entirely different meanings, and you'll eventually want to distinguish between them. Hitting 404 hell over and over as you're trying to get your own script to work is particularly annoying - so make your 500-series error pages relatively tame.

Boo,
Hoegarden White, Belgian, brewed by the same people as Stella, yep good stuff.

MorganaX,
hehe, I have thought about it a few times,
there's some great upsells for cookery/recipe sites:

Equipment
Food Products
Books
Holidays

It's something I would enjoy doing
and its a high income audience aswell.

I've always wanted to open a small restaurant/cafe or maybe a shop that sells quality
ready made food, but living in a smallish city here, people are very set in their eating habits,
they really only eat Spanish food.

They've got some lovely produce, great cheeses, meats, seafood and fish but if you try anything different with it people look at you funny! hehe.

I have to travel for 2 hours to get sushi,
so now i just make it myself.

England realised it had pretty crap food 20-30 years ago, and embraced alot of food from different countries and now creates some lovely stuff by nicking little bits from differnt countries.

Here is the same as France and Italy, because they've always had lovely food, they dont look
to other countries for something new.

Hi vnwr,

I had some 'strange news' today, I asked my host to check my 404 page to ensure it wasn't corrupted & they informed me that there is no 404 page set up on my domains!

(I understood that normally these are set up by the host - obviously I was wrong)!

I know that I have to create an htaccess file in order to capture that traffic & redirect it, I gather that this particular htaccess will have to go in the main domain folder, but I don't want to prevent access to anything within the domain (obviously) - just to direct the error traffic correctly - so I've been looking at the htaccess tutorial by billy & I'm guessing that only the following lines will be required:
-----------------------------------------------
AuthUserFile /dev/null
AuthGroupFile /dev/null

RewriteEngine On
ErrorDocument 400 http://www.angel4christyb.com/special.htm
ErrorDocument 403 http://www.angel4christyb.com/special.htm
ErrorDocument 404 http://www.angel4christyb.com/special.htm
ErrorDocument 500 http://www.angel4christyb.com/special.htm
ErrorDocument 501 http://www.angel4christyb.com/special.htm
ErrorDocument 503 http://www.angel4christyb.com/special.htm
-----------------------------------------------
I will also need to create a 'special.htm' page - which will be my '404 page'
-----------------------------------------------
Also - when I look at my domain stats I see some other error codes (401 & 405) I assume I should add those to the above.
-----------------------------------------------

Can anyone tell me if I'm on the right track here please?

Belguim makes the best beers I think,
