Natasha,

If you have a 40gig drive, its got to be an ATA100. Ask Dave how he handled the ribbon cable problem with the older motherboard?

Yea...very true Barron! I was stunned...when I finished building this new machine...stuck the xp cd in...boom...it detected and installed all the drivers. Even the raid drivers installed automatically! System came up and has been without fault since...very fucking cool!

But, this is all new hardware...all fully xp compliant...makes a big difference. When I installed xp on the old machine...quite a few drivers had to be loaded manually...but it was still very stable :)

I remember when I first loaded 98. It was so cool to have a system that didnt crash. Really, 98 was very stable for me.

Then I loaded XP. I really liked it! It never crashed. Then when I put 98 back on, I could really tell the difference about how much better XP handled memory and hard drive calls.

I would like to have it back. XP is what the other win programs should have been!!

Hmmm...soooo, Dave is kinda like Michael Keaton in Multiplicity! Damn...that was a funny movie! LOL!

Sounds like you're on the downhill side now though :) If it's actually scanning away...it's already accessing the drive...you should be okay :)

Gooooo Dave! LMAO!

Yikes! I missed that...yea, 20 times is a bunch! LOL!

Yeppers...that was why I went to XP in the first place. Over-all, it's been WAY more stable than 98 for me. Used to crash...as in BSOD crash 98 several times a day. XP...think in the almost 2 years I've been using it...have seen a BSOD one time...really like that!

I didn't say any such thing Barron! Whut you talkin bout willis?! LOL!

In all seriousness...I'd be more suspect of the interaction between xp and your mobo. But hell, anything is possible!

Actually, I was referring to re-installing a licensed copy multiple times on the same machine :) XP can be finicky with older hardware sometimes...my 4 year old machine has required a few re-installs...

Natasha,

Not sure if I can place an order within 2 days hahaha

What a salesman your are :)

I just got the damn recurring stuff going for Paypal and have to redo somethings for the members area. So I figured I'd give it a new look. But I'm graphicly and design challenged!! It will take me a couple of weeks, 30-40 tries before I come up with something that looks half-way decent.

If I could afford it. I'd let ya'll just go through it and do the whole website :)

Message # 118770 64.229.0.148 Thu Oct 16 01:48:12 2003 G57

MrYum, since your the first to say it. I used a burned copy of XP for a long time. The only thing that wouldnt work was the update thing they want ya to download. It choked on that everytime.

But then about a month ago, I loaded one of the "have to" patches. The next day, notepad stopped working correctly, a couple of hours later, workpad stopped working correctly. I spooked. Did a quick backup and reloaded 98. No clue if microsoft was playing around or my motherboard was acting up.

But, I have everything backup now. The only inconvienance will be going to get a new board if this one stops :)

WooHoo! Great news Natasha! Once again...Goooo Hubby!

And yeppers...a complete backup is definitely in order :) Said the dork who almost never did backups...lol

If the laptop has usb ports...you could always disable the onboard mouse and run a usb mouse instead. Would buy some more time out of the laptop anyway :)

I usually do that anyway...much better quality mouse...

Ahh...didn't realize that Natasha. Sooo, the system was originally Win98? You never got to a point where XP asked to prepare the drives did you? Not sure, but I don't think 98 will recognize an XP formatted drive =/

RuhRoh...self motivating mice...bad bad mice...grrrr...

That's pretty bizarre Barron...never heard of such a thing. Certainly have never experienced that. Think he mighta been yankin your chain a little?

I dunno MrYum. One of my customers got hit by lighting. The motherboard actually survived, weird. But he replaced everything but the chip. He had to call Microsoft and get them to release the hold, or whatever they call it. Ten minutes later everything worked like it was suppose to.

but ya know how stories go, he may have been blowing the story up a little.

5 years? Yep, sounds like motherboard to me. Mind is 4 years old. My mouse will slowly creep its way across the screen. Started doing it about 3 weeks ago. Its creepy to watch the the arrow start moving when your not touching the mouse :)

At first I thought it was someone controlling it remotely. Then I thought my mouse was going bad. But alas, it wasnt either one :(

I hoping it lasts 2 more months so I can get a good deal on christmas prices, hehe...

I agree with MrYum, I think the data is still there also :)

I didnt know that you trying to load XP though. One trick is to disconnect from the net. If XP is registered, microsoft may be turning everything off for you remotely. I havent learned all the tricks yet on their licenseing agreement. They may be sensing a new computer.

Barron is definitely the tech guy here, but sure sounds like your actually data is still there. Accessing it 'should' be possible once you get XP installed again. Not to be a smart ass, but disk space is way cheap these days. Might be the easiest solution too :)

Hi ya Robbo! Yep...always gotta have virus protection and firewalls up and running...and auto updated. Amazing all the crap that's floating around on the net these days...almost need a puter condom! LOL!

MrYum (VNWR Community Member)
Message # 118745 68.164.88.59 Thu Oct 16 01:22:08 2003 B03

Natasha,

I really dont think its the drives. Even if you get windows to load this time, I dont think it will last.

These symptoms are very typical of controllers going bad. If it works, good for you. But if not, and you still having problems. There are only two options.

1. Get a contoller card and turn off onboard controllers in the bios.

2. Get a new motherboard.

Its a little late now, but you could still get a low-leveler and zero out one of the 2gig drives. Then try to load windows. If it still gives you trouble, its diffently the controllers.

caveat: I could be completely wrong :))

Its hard to tech without seeing things happen.

How is the new load going, has it stopped anywhere?

How old was the Hard drive?
