Editors Note: Bailey is taking some time off from writing during this holiday season and the following is a rerun of one of her past articles that is just as relevant and timely as it was one year ago...Enjoy!

WOW! Christmas is a week away and there is so little time for anything.

I enjoy the Holiday’s and I try to make the best of all the hustle and bustle. I’ve caught up with a few friends, did some shopping, volunteered at school for holiday fund raising, did more shopping, but I still haven’t wrapped anything yet! It’s a fun time and at this point in my life, I’m glad that I have the flexibility to do it. Between enjoying the holiday and life in general, getting to the computer was almost impossible this past week. Although I couldn’t get much work done building sites and all, I’ve taken care of other aspects of doing business.

When I first started, my plan was to just dabble a bit and get a feeling of what it was all about. I really didn’t pay much attention to the “business details” at the time. It didn’t take long for me to realize how much I like doing this, and before I knew it my focus was “building up the business” but in reality I never really started it! It was Mr. Yum’s article last week that got me thinking. I realized it was time. So I took the opportunity this week to gather some info. Some may be unnecessary and some should have been done sooner, but...this is the way it is. It will be a few hundred dollars to get started but I feel it’s a good investment. By taking this step I made an investment in ME. We’ve had discussions on the board about “Do you tell what you do for a living.” Certainly this is a legitimate business and if for no other reason, than for myself, I’m making it “legal“. I’m setting up a corporation, PO Box and opening a business checking account. I no longer “dabble” in web designing, I own a company that designs adult web sites.

I say it that way because it helps me stay focused, NOT because I want to sound important. I’m really enjoying my work, and as I stated earlier I just love the flexibility, so this decision is also a commitment. I feel I have better focus not only for a task at hand, but overall. I don’t work AT home on my computer anymore, I work FROM home for “Idon’thaveanameyet.enterprises”. Taking this step also gives me a sense of structure and organization. I’m using what I’ve learned to outline the coming year. The very first thing I needed to do was make a budget adjustment. I underestimated the cost of running a business. Buying a domain name or two, hosting costs, software, content, fees for PO box, banking, and corp. fee all start to add up. I just tore the old budget up and made a new, more realistic one. I’m setting up daily, weekly and monthly goals as if I had employees. And I even set business hours. I have found it is very easy to get so involved in your work that you forget everything else. Setting business hours separates work from home, and that’s very important to me.

The last “hurdle” for me this week and hopefully for the year, will be when I meet with my lawyer and accountant tomorrow. You see, my attorney is my brother and my accountant is a longtime family friend. It will be the first time they’ll be hearing about my business.

WELL...like my grandma used to say, “In for a penny, in for a pound!” I should have everything is place within the next couple of days and I’m looking forward to starting the New Year with a “new and improved” business.

Just my newbie two cents worth.
Have a wonderful holiday everyone :)
