Two Cents Worth

As I was reconciling the week, my first thoughts were how little time I had spent actually working. Working in the sense of building and submitting. Now, I know better...building and submitting is the key to success in this business, but there is so much to learn and NEVER enough time to do it all.

I’ve bookmarked so many things to do and this week I picked out a few that either have been there the longest or really got my attention.

One of the things to do was to look into a site counter. Server stats provide a lot of information, but I wanted to get more specific information about different pages so I started looking into counters. Not all sponsor stats provide referring urls and my server stats include a number of hits to a folder but includes all sub folders without listing the urls. I wanted to get a better idea of which ads were being clicked on [to the sponsor] and which weren’t as effective. I wanted something quick and simple. While browsing a few different counters-I couldn’t believe how much information they can obtain - I wouldn’t know what to do with it all! I tried a few of them - just to get an idea...they were all simple and easy enough. It’s taking more time to figure out which bits of information are unnecessary, which can I maybe use someday, which ones I want and which are really most useful.

The idea of counters went to the “back burner” when on my “to do list” was to read the archive on blogs. I wasn’t able to make the class the sponsor here on the board gave on blogs but when I saw the post about it on VNWR it really piqued my interest. I’ve been doing some research I’m and I’ve made it my project to conqeur!

I’m reading all I can and I used the free blog script suggested in the newbie lesson and then found two others that I tried. I understand the concept and the three that I tried were simple to set up - if you understand PHP and MYSQL! I had that sinking feeling after reading a few tutorials “I‘ll never learn this!” There always seemed to be a warning before each tutorial...There’s a learning curve - it takes a little time. After reading that I knew it wasn’t going to simple and easy. But, I want a blog so I’m on a mission to learn about PHP and MYSQL. Just as I learned html, SSI etc. I’ll learn this too. I’m really excited about this project and I hope to get it going real soon.

I also tried out trial versions of some banner and image editing software. I managed to make my first banner - it needs to be tweaked a bit, but I‘m happy with the overall results. Looking over the banner, I realized I should have used a better quality photo and I needed more work on outlining (actually erasing the background)around the model in the pic. This just take practice and I’m picking up some tips along the way. With a better quality photo and a steadier hand, I redid the pic for the banner. I was hoping to just replace the image in the banner I made, but it didn’t work out that way and I have to remake the banner. I love the flexiblity of this program but I haven’t had a chance to learn all of the features - I’m sure there are a few shortcuts that I don’t know about.

Even though my work week was way off balance, it was productive nonetheless. Now I have to take everything I learned last week and use it this week to build submit repeat.

Just my 2 cents...
Happy Holiday :)
