Last week we focused in on the Western Conference, so this week we will focus in on the Eastern Conference. The East has a few surprises of it's own this season, even a few that rival the stories if the West.
Without a doubt the biggest surprise of the season so far this year is the New York Islanders. Even though they have cooled off a bit this week they still are out an incredible 33 points in just 23 games, which places them second in the league behind Detroit. The Islanders picked some big name players in the off-season free agent market and they are paying off big time. Look for the under-rated Chris Osgood to bring this team into the playoffs this year, and they might become the sleeper of the East. Don't count out the Rangers just yet though, after a dismal start to the season the Rangers have been on fire and are giving the Isles a run for their money. If they can keep pretty boy Lindros healthy and Fleury's straw out of the nose candy, they could make it to the second round of the playoffs.
Where are the great New Jersey Devils from last season? Dead last in their division, a pitiful .500 record with just 9 wins on the year. They have not played up to the skill level they posses.
The Northeast Division has Toronto perched in the lead with 31 points, they are continuing to play as they have the past few years ... good solid hockey. The question is can they finish into the playoffs. Time will tell. Boston is close behind with 29 points but has played one less game then Toronto. This is always a competitive division and this year is no exception only 4 points between 1st and 4th spot. Montreal is starting to look like a playoff contender for the first time in a long time. If the injury jinx stays away this year there will be some happy Canadians fans.
The Southeast Division continues its tradition of producing the bottom feeders of the league. It is the only division where if you can play above .500 hockey you are at the top of your division. Talk about a free ride into the playoffs. One bright spot is the Carolina Hurricanes who are off to their best start in a long time, with 30 points and a 12 - 9 - 4 - 2 record. If Washington continues to play the way they are, you can look for Carolina in the playoff hunt. It must be painful for the management of the Washington Capitals to write that big fat check for Jaromir Jagr every week and look at the sub-par 21 point start with just 9 wins. It's a good thing they are in this division otherwise they would be in dead last in any other division.
That's a look at both conferences as it stands now, over the next few weeks I'll take a look into various aspects of the game. Goal scorers, goons, grinders, divers, whimps or whiners won't be safe from Hockey Hooha with Wingnut. See you next week.
