Welcome to this weeks Hockey Whooha with Wingnut. I know it's already 20 games into the season but all that World Series Whooha got in the way of starting this column. Each week I'll take a look at the various games and Whooha around the league and report it here. As always the DFN is looking for writers, if you would like to become a sports writer, let us know.

I'll do my best to keep my opinion non-bias, but my nickname is *Wingnut*, there is only so much a guy can do. :^)

A look at the top of this NHL this week reveals that the leagues best is also its oldest team, the biggest payroll, and full of future hall of fame players. Yes, the Detroit Red Wings are the leagues top team right now with 35 points. Not bad for a bunch of old men on the descent of their illustrious careers, the question is and will remain will this star studded last into the playoffs. Time will tell the tale; it should be a fun season to watch that much is for sure.

This season has started out to be one of the most memorable starts in sometime. With the exception of the Redwings in the Western Conference you have to do a double take at the standings. None of the "top" teams are at the top; they are in fact bottom feeding right now.

The Central Division has St. Louis (last years cup favorites) sitting in third place with 22 points behind second place Chicago. Yes, I said Chicago. The Blackhawks are off to a booming start this year and are in second spot with 28 points. It seems like the Hawks finally remembered how to play original six style of hockey this year.

The Northwest Division has Calgary perched on top with 30 points and Edmonton right there with them, also with 30 points. It is a nice change to see some Canadian teams playing really great hockey, keep your eyes on Calgary this year they could be the sleeper team out of the West. Now where is the great and powerful Colorado Avalanche? They are sitting in third with a measly 21 points and a .500 record.

Only two points separate third and last place for the Lanche. I guess the purchase of the now retired Ray Bourque, and the departure of the spleen free Peter Forsberg and more than the team can handle right now. If it weren't for Patrick Roy's three shutouts this year they would be firmly placed in last position.

The Pacific Division has last years Redwing killing L.A. Kings in dead last. Five wins and 14 points are all they have been able to muster so far this season. Makes you wonder in that trade for Jason Allison was worth it or not. They did after all trade their (at the time) team-leading scorer Glen Murray.

Next week we will take a deeper look into the Eastern Conference where there are some interesting starts as well. Until then here are some game recaps from this weeks games to date.
