My Newbie
Two Cents Worth

There was some new equipment installed in the gym this past week. It was a set-up for boxing, and included a speed bag and various punching bags. It looked interesting but I wasn’t particularly interested in it, boxing isn’t my thing. That is until I saw this guy using the speed bag. I don’t think I have ever hit a speed bag and I watched this guy rhythmically punch the bag with amazing speed. I decided I wanted to try it.
When he finished his workout, I approached him asked a few questions about it. I explained I had never hit one before and he gave me the basics of getting started and he told me to take a shot. I was expecting a very heavy bag, so I took a hard punch and the bag just pounded back and forth and then went around in circles. I was so surprised! It’s not heavy at all. Quickly getting over my embarrassment, I gave it another shot. I thought about “the basics” he mentioned. Hold your hands this way, hit only with the outside meaty part of your hand, keep your fist tight, don’t drop your arms, hit the bag in the same spot and hit it as it’s heading back to you, watch your shoulders and neck and keep your knees soft.
All I wanted to do was hit the bag!
I took a few more swats at the bag and just couldn‘t get the hang of it. I felt like an idiot. But this young man was kind and patient enough, to encourage me to continue even when I was ready to walk away from it. He explained that there aren’t many people that can just “do it” the first time, and that everyone has their own rhythm He offered the advice to work at it 20 minutes a day and he “guaranteed” by the end of the week I would have the rhythm down and then I could work on speed after that. Jokingly, I told him I accepted the challenge - but I had some serious doubts that I would ever be able to work with the speed bag. I thanked him for his time and left, but the idea of “mastering” the speed bag stayed with me.
Strange as it may sound, the last time I felt like this was when I started in this business. Now I’m not comparing starting and building a business to learning how to use a speed bag. I’m pointing out the challenges of doing something you may feel is impossible to achieve.
When I decided to get into the adult business I had never made a web page or even surfed many adult sites. But I was curious enough and determined to learn. However, the first few weeks working, felt like the first time I hit that speed bag. It was totally different than what I expected, I was surprised by it and quickly lost my confidence. And then I landed a VNWR.
I soon realized I needed to start with the basics, and that was as daunting as not knowing them. Drop the html editor and use notepad, find a niche, sell the sponsor not the content, build, submit, repeat, get involved, get into a rhythm and routine. I had a lot of doubts about ever being able to learning enough to get started in the adult business, much less succeed and forget about any type of rhythm or routine. But it was the encouragement and support from Voltar and the VNWR community that kept me going.
The speed bag became “personal”.
Batting the bag with your fingertips is one thing, hitting it with a closed fist is something different. I had the rhythm, but I couldn’t control the bag with my closed fist. This quickly became frustrating, because I knew what I wanted to do, but just couldn’t seem to get the hang of it. And I knew after I was able to control the bag with a closed fist, I still had to work building up speed.
