My Newbie
Two Cents Worth

There was some new equipment installed in the gym this past week. It was a set-up for boxing, and included a speed bag and various punching bags. It looked interesting but I wasn’t particularly interested in it, boxing isn’t my thing. That is until I saw this guy using the speed bag. I don’t think I have ever hit a speed bag and I watched this guy rhythmically punch the bag with amazing speed. I decided I wanted to try it.

When he finished his workout, I approached him asked a few questions about it. I explained I had never hit one before and he gave me the basics of getting started and he told me to take a shot. I was expecting a very heavy bag, so I took a hard punch and the bag just pounded back and forth and then went around in circles. I was so surprised! It’s not heavy at all. Quickly getting over my embarrassment, I gave it another shot. I thought about “the basics” he mentioned. Hold your hands this way, hit only with the outside meaty part of your hand, keep your fist tight, don’t drop your arms, hit the bag in the same spot and hit it as it’s heading back to you, watch your shoulders and neck and keep your knees soft.

All I wanted to do was hit the bag!

I took a few more swats at the bag and just couldn‘t get the hang of it. I felt like an idiot. But this young man was kind and patient enough, to encourage me to continue even when I was ready to walk away from it. He explained that there aren’t many people that can just “do it” the first time, and that everyone has their own rhythm He offered the advice to work at it 20 minutes a day and he “guaranteed” by the end of the week I would have the rhythm down and then I could work on speed after that. Jokingly, I told him I accepted the challenge - but I had some serious doubts that I would ever be able to work with the speed bag. I thanked him for his time and left, but the idea of “mastering” the speed bag stayed with me.

Strange as it may sound, the last time I felt like this was when I started in this business. Now I’m not comparing starting and building a business to learning how to use a speed bag. I’m pointing out the challenges of doing something you may feel is impossible to achieve.

When I decided to get into the adult business I had never made a web page or even surfed many adult sites. But I was curious enough and determined to learn. However, the first few weeks working, felt like the first time I hit that speed bag. It was totally different than what I expected, I was surprised by it and quickly lost my confidence. And then I landed a VNWR.

I soon realized I needed to start with the basics, and that was as daunting as not knowing them. Drop the html editor and use notepad, find a niche, sell the sponsor not the content, build, submit, repeat, get involved, get into a rhythm and routine. I had a lot of doubts about ever being able to learning enough to get started in the adult business, much less succeed and forget about any type of rhythm or routine. But it was the encouragement and support from Voltar and the VNWR community that kept me going. The speed bag became “personal”.

Batting the bag with your fingertips is one thing, hitting it with a closed fist is something different. I had the rhythm, but I couldn’t control the bag with my closed fist. This quickly became frustrating, because I knew what I wanted to do, but just couldn’t seem to get the hang of it. And I knew after I was able to control the bag with a closed fist, I still had to work building up speed.

It was starting to get overwhelming but I was still determined to do conquer this. I looked up at the bag and gave it a swat with my fingertip and then made a fist. I gently tapped the bag with my closed fist with the outside meaty part of my hand. I must have hit it right because it came back (instead of going around in circles)before I knew it I heard the rhythmic sound(in my mind it’s just a quick 1-2-3 -1-2-3) I finally got the hang of it and I was able to keep the rhythm for almost 3 minutes. I was thrilled and exhausted! I had achieved the first and second level of the speed bag, but I still had more to learn.

Continuing the analogy with the speed bag and business. The first level is to make the decision to succeed. Make it “personal” Understand what you’re getting into. When I realized I wasn’t just building adult websites, and that I was starting and building a business, it took on a new meaning and a greater commitment and I became even more determined.

Be ready to take the next step, you’ll be there before you know it. It’s not that it’s hard but it’s not easy. Ask for help. Be confident - we all follow the rules but have our own style - it’s not a matter of right or wrong. Work on your rhythm and routine, you will get there. Expect the unexpected. And to use my Uncle Pete’s favorite expression “for cryin’ out loud, just Go for it!”

One more thought...

As I’ve mentioned many times, I believe in the ancient art of feng shui. It was on October 15, 2002 that I wrote on a white piece of paper in black ink - Please help be understand what I need to get started in this business and help me find a way to stay focused and involved. It’s been wrapped in foil and on the lower left corner of my desk since then.

It was about the same time that I saw a post much like the one Voltar posted this past week, asking if anyone would like to share their experiences as an adult webmaster for the DFN. I was so excited and thankful for finding VNWR, I wrote a paragraph or two and sent it in to the DFN. At the time I didn’t even think about writing on a weekly basis.

On October 15, 2003 I sent my 52nd article to the DFN. My request for a way to stay focused and involved led to writing for the DFN. Of course you don’t have to believe in feng shui (even thought it works for you anyway) to contribute to the DFN, you have to believe in yourself and make a commitment. If you find that your not moving forward or you’re overwhelmed or hit your stride and doing great, or even some interesting information about our business write about it and send it to the DFN, the perks and advantages of doing so are well worth effort.

One last bit of advice - if you decide to challenge the speed bag, do it in moderation my muscles ache so much, I still can’t lift my arms.

Just my 2 cents.
