My Newbie
Two Cents Worth

It’s been another crazy week. When I started in this business just over a year ago, I figured there would be plenty of life in my computer. It was about 3yrs old, with plenty of disk space and memory. Over the course of the year, I’ve added all the necessary protection and until now I haven’t had much trouble. Lately though, it’s slowed down tremendously, it freezes often, it constantly has to be rebooted, it’s making some strange sounds and I can’t get it through a complete virus scan. I’m very concerned! I’ve uninstalled programs I don’t use, and put it through defrag but it didn’t help much. I’m suddenly faced with a few decisions. I’ve been following the computer problems that some folks here at VNWR are having and it doesn’t look like fun.

The computer is still under warranty and I could bring it to the repair shop, but I’m not very comfortable with that at all! Mostly because I don’t want anyone being able to snoop into my business. And recently, I sent my kids computer for repair and the first thing they did was delete all the files and programs, (they never told me they were going to do that)and then told ME to add them back on, one by one until I found the one that was causing the problem. I wasn’t very happy about that at all, and btw it’s still not working.

I could try to find the problem myself. I know that I would get the most knowledgeable, friendly help around, right here at VNWR. The computer is about 4 years old. It’s a brand name computer “ready for the future” with a powerful intel processor, 6 bays and 4 slots. (well, thats what is written on the side of the computer.) I may be putting the “cart before the horse” here, but I’m considering whether to buy or even build a new computer.

My biggest obstacle - besides knowing very little about computers - is time. I’m struggling for every minute of time I have already, and I know I will be tied up for days fixing this. A concern is putting in so much time into a 4 year old machine. Will it be reliable? Is this the start of one part after another needing replacement?

This is my main computer - (I have a laptop but I find it difficult to work on for long periods of time, besides my kids are using it because their computer is back in the shop.)I need to be prepared for the worst.

Buying a new computer is not an expense I want to have right now - but when I set up my business, I earmarked some money for just this reason. We can’t work without a computer. If I decide to go with a new computer, I‘ve been thinking about the benefits of building it myself. You know the saying “Give a man a fish and you feed him dinner, teach a man to fish and he’s out of the house all day! LOL Seriously, I feel when you build something yourself, you get a better understanding of how it works. That understanding can help find and fix repairs down the road.

OK I’ve pretty much convinced myself I need(want)a new computer. Now if everything could just happen in perfect order. I need for my current computer to continue working, until I could build a new one. And of course building a new one is going to be a snap, then I could figure out what is wrong with the old one and use it as a back up. Fix the kids computer and then get my laptop back from them. and it should all be done within two days, so I can get back to work. If it were only be that easy! As I mentioned before, several folks from VNWR have recently gone through this, I could feel their sense of accomplishment after it was finished, but I also remember their frustration while going through it.

I’m going to have to think this through a bit more, in the meantime I’ve made sure everything is backed up. I’ve learned to expect the unexpected and more importantly “back up your work”. I took off the “business management hat” and put on the one that read “computer repair.“ I clicked on the help desk... First I’ll find out what the strange noise is and then work on everything else. It’s always something....

Just my 2 cents.
