I'm Becoming Jaded
Before getting involved with VNWR and seeing some of the work that was being produced by people here my free sites were very bland. Small boring text links around standard banners and nothing very adventurous when it came to page layout or presentation.
The influence of a an out-of-the-box thinker like Voltar soon began to have an affect on me although I am not sure that I will ever get to the stage of using tomatoes as a background. That influence also affects others too and the guy who built the site under review is obviously one of those so affected.
You can find the site here:
And, while the background is not tomatoes it certainly seems to be effective in helping to focus the surfer's attention on the most important part of the page.
There is just one word of warning about the site from the site builder. Don't click on the bottom link unless you want to go into the fifth dimension of console purgatory.
The page is definitely designed to load fast - around 10 seconds on a standard modem connection and the choice of a banner with a small file size goes a long way towards keeping that loading time down. The background image is just 1.13kb
The banner color and the way it contrasts with the basic page background color will attract the surfer's attention too. In fact load the page and just watch the path that your eyes take down that page and note what you actually see as you follow that page.
Looking under the hood at the meta tags is also interesting. Just lately I see more and more people offering the 'good' advice that meta tags are all but useless. I certainly do not agree with that view and when it takes so little time to add useful meta tags I fail to see why so many people are ignoring them.
On this site the keyword tag is probably a little underdone and only single words have been targeted. The competition for good search engine placement for single words is always fierce so it is often better to target two and three word phrases rather than just single words.
Before we leave the index page we should spend a moment thinking about the exit link. Personally I think that it should be in a more contrasting color. It certainly doesn't have to stand out like a neon sign but it should be a little more visible.
