So, you wanna be a Porn Peddler?

Many folks that get started in this business do so under faulty reasoning. Of course the biggest is that it is easy money.

It is easy to become an adult webmaster. Find a freehost, steal some pictures off the net, sign up with a sponsor and the money just comes rolling in. Or, you can look to one of several 'turn-key' designers that even let you use thier domains if you pay up front and sign up under them with sponsors. Again, all you have to do is sit back and figure out how to spend all that money.

Well, if you are reading this, then you have already figured out that those two scenarios are both very real, AND very unrealistic. By real, I mean we have all met someone that fits those situations. Both the gullible newbie as well as the predatory designer/marketeer.

Of course, we all know that we need to treat what we do as a business. There have been numberous articles here in the DFN concerning setting up legitimate account journals, seeking professional help with taxes, legal matters as well as estate planning. You can even find help with time management, material sources and marketing skills. There have been articles concerning content, design, coding, FTP management, hosting, and every other aspect of what it takes to be successful.

But one of the hardest things to do is to remember to have fun. If we did not enjoy the 'content' of our business I think many of us would not have begun working it. Guess we ARE a bunch of pervs after all.

Staying focused is often difficult. There are many ways to make money in the industry. You could build free sites, TGP galleries, search engine pages, AVS, pay-sites, etc. Traffic comes from many varied sources and it is paramount to remember to try everything. Eventually you will find YOUR niche and become the expert there.

Network with other webmasters. Throw around ideas and work together on projects. The traffic will have a different flavor and you will be suprised at the things you don't know, the things you will learn, and the things that will come to you as an epiphany. But keep your head on straight. Learn whom you can trust and whom to avoid. Again, being here at VNWR is a great first step in self protection. By far nearly all of the people that I have met here are ethical, pleasant and professional. Not a lot of weeding to do, since the environment elicits such folk.

In this business there will always be nay sayers. Let them talk. Let them whine. Let them worry. Have a plan. Follow it. Simple as that.
