To Fish or to Flounder*?

*Flounder - A flat fish that typically lays on the bottom of the ocean flopped on one side waiting for food to come along.

One day on the board I said I was floundering and someone asked what I had meant. In thinking about it to myself I wrote this article.

Seeing names on the board day after day is like seeing the same person down the street all the time. They get in your head. Then later on you think gee I wonder what was up with that guy we never even said hello. Or perhaps you've had a chance to do something yet passed it up for some reason. It can take only one person, one moment, one opportunity to change your life. But we never know until we give opportunity of ourselves in each instance.

The Newbie Community is not a lake nor an ocean. It is rock that I could hold onto if I got in trouble. It filled a confidence void. An unfounded lack of something that exists solely in our minds. An invisible thing that can be the greatest barrier one will ever face. Or the best rock from which to stand and cast for opportunity. I did not post to the newbie board until I had enough confidence in myself and my abilities to do so. But it was the very implementation of many of the things I had learned there previously that allowed me to achieve enough to gain that confidence.

"Grief is the species of idleness."
Samuel Johnson

I have seen, been part of and achieved some incredible things prior to webmastering all the while wrestling with the silent entity. But only when I let it be silent do the incredible things manifest. A point where you don't need the rock so much because you are relaxed and supported by your own buoyancy in the water. But the rock is there when it's time to dry off and become refreshed. When I let the entity raise it's voice those things disappear or are altogether invisible, lost in the fog. Lift the fog and you will see clearly. Do not resist the water and you will float.

It's evident that networking and communication are stressed and important. And if not just for the chance to interact learn and enjoy along with others it is a chance to fish for opportunity. But if you don't have your line in the water, if your not up for the hunt you are simply floundering. Some people will use the expression "Oh he's always fishing for opportunity" in a bad way. But for me that fishing line is the hand that reaches out to welcome opportunity and how I believe the quote should be taken. And the most fertile waters I have found are that of this Newbie Community thanks to the many rocks that grace it's shore.

Are you fishing or floundering?

If you lurk post, if you post participate. If you participate prosper. If you are one of the rocks...Thank You!
