My First Toplist Submission

So you want to try listing a site at a toplist or three! At this point you have most likely made free sites or galleries and submitted them to link lists and thumbnail gallery posts. All the usual places. Now you want to try some more traffic sources that may be going untapped. Toplists can definitely be a good place to look.

What Do I submit?

First you may wonder what type of site you submit to a toplist. Fortunately the answer is much easier than many toplist rules are vague. Most toplists unless otherwise designated will accept a standard free site. I like to incorporate toplists into all my free sites just like any other link list. The difference being I can send traffic to the toplist from other pages that will also count in it`s favor for positioning on the given list. Such as other mirrors of that site entrance or multi choice exit consoles it`s more webmaster friendly versions may spawn. As long as it`s in a way that the toplists rules allow it works in your favor.

And I just brought up another thing in mentioning webmaster friendly. Most toplists typically are more lenient in the rules than standard link lists and tgp link sites. Many will accept lesser amounts of free content and or a console or two. Other things you might consider submitting to a toplist are hubs, special npows and those type of sites that get to content in a few clicks whether galleries or pic pages. The possibilities I feel open up a bit more with toplists in that there has been no definitive standard for how to build a site that gets listed as has link lists and tgp`s. Though it is best for newbies to stick with the basic models until more skills are developed the freedom is there. But as always read the rules

Last week in this column MorganaX talked about finding and choosing toplists. If you have`nt read that article you should stop and go back and read it then come back to continue from this point. You`ll find it at this link.

Submitting

Okay so you`ve decided on a site to submit to one or more toplists. Generally if one is used more will only help. This very well may be the longer term traffic you end up with months after your site has been listed elsewhere and traffic surges have long died down. As long as you have the odd clicks in from a few link lists and send some to the toplists you`ll remain listed. And from that pull yet more fresh surfers across your ads. The toplist traffic from several different lists can become virtual and keep feeding itself for a long time if done correctly. Correctly simply means to make full use of a given site by sumitting it widely and establishing a sufficient flow of traffic for it to happen.

So you have your sites url and a list of toplists to visit. Now it`s just a matter of finding their submit page if you have`nt bookmarked them already. Usually you`ll find a "Add Your Link" link somewhere on the toplist page. Once you get to the submit script you fill it in just like you would for any submission. When you hit submit the confirmation page will load and on it will be a url with the code in it for you to use as your recip. This will give the site you just submitted credit for all clicks sent to the toplist from it and thus move it up the list. You`ll want to go back and insert this url in all the proper places. You`ll also want to save this url to a text file that can be used to store all future toplist codes and information. The point is to start becoming organized with them from the beginning before you end up with a hundred of them all over the place. You may have an organizational plan in place already such as the work smarter not harder npow or something similar. These can be incorporated into that as well.

Now with your correct recip urls in place and new pages uploaded you`re ready to let the traffic flow! As another tip I like to do my toplist submits first that way I can have my links changed before I do my link list submits. That eliminates having to change anything one it`s been submitted and assures that your new traffic source will be working from the first click in!
