Babe Stakeout

Picture if you will, an ocean beach. If you stay there a few hours you'll come to understand that the roar is incessant. Wave after wave after wave arrives... the waves just keep coming. Sure, there will be variations from tide and wind and so on, but even so, the waves just keep coming in. Picture each wave as being a traffic surge - wouldn't it be nice to have your traffic arriving in a continuous series of surges?

Since we're here, let's take a close look at that ocean beach.

If you picture things the way I picture them, the beach will include a fine-looking babe with her legs spread. Her legs are spread wide and staked down that way. Likewise with her arms, except that her hands remain at shoulder height with her elbows bent a bit, so that she has no difficulty breathing. And, of course, so that she can squirm.

On a sandy beach soaked in salt water, she quickly decides not to squirm so much. She is staked out on that beach, face up, with head toward shore. The occasional wave washes over her - every fifteenth wave or so washes up far enough. With her head furthest away from the oncoming waves, she can see what's coming, and has the best chance of keeping her lungs from filling up with seawater.

Being the thoughtful guy that I am, I mounded up the sand before staking her out, so that her head would be higher than her chest. That gives her a better view of what's coming. But as the waves wash over her, they tend to hollow out the sand she's laying on, so she gets to see less and less. The warm water is nice, but the sunburn could be nasty.

By now, the tide's ebb has turned to flow. Above the ocean's roar, only I can hear her scream. It seems she has this fear of seaweed. She'll get over it.

If you'd seen the discussion beforehand, you'd understand that I'm actually a nicer guy than it might seem. You see, I did give her the choice of orientation: Face up or down; staked out sideways, head toward ocean, or head away from the ocean. I even let her choose how long she would be there before the tide changed.

To have her head downhill would have been the better choice. She'll understand that for next time. With her head lower than her chest, her lungs can't fill up with water. Next time will be by moonlight... a very different effect.

I seem to have digressed. Perhaps it's time for me to put together a BDSM Beach Babe site. There shouldn't be any question that she's wet and squirming and ready for release, should there? Perhaps I should mention in passing, that intensity can be a major draw for the BDSM folks.

Okay, back to work. I hope I wasn't having too much fun at your expense. With me, stuff like that just kind of happens. I hadn't even considered a staked-out Beach Babe when I started writing this essay! Now I'm thinking about jellyfish washing in to shore, but we'll save that for another time.

Remember that traffic surge you got from the new listing? Picture that surge as being one of those waves hitting the beach. Or picture the wave hitting your babe, if that's your thing. The traffic surge is just that: A surge. After a few days, or even a few hours, it tapers down to a much smaller level. If it's a permanent link, you'll keep getting traffic, but it won't be anywhere near the volume you got from being a new listing. If it's a tgp listing, your traffic will drop back down to zero.

If you have a lot of listings, you will have traffic. You'll have traffic coming from a lot of sources, which is a good thing. But it's still the new listing that brings the surge of traffic.

Years ago, when we got our first listing with Persian Kitty, we saw a nice traffic surge. We continue to get traffic from that listing, but not like we did the first week. So that's one wave coming in. We also listed the site with Yahoo, so that's two waves. Other big links sites made three, and four, and five... but even with a dozen big listings, we're nowhere near having an ocean. We've pretty much run out of places we can list that site... so now what?

Remember it's the new listings that bring on the waves. That's why we newbies are being taught to build, and build, and build some more. Or more precisely, build, and list, and build, and list, and build and list. With avs listings, and hand-edited search engines like dmoz.org, and spiders, and links sites, and toplists, and tgps, and banner exchanges, and so on, there are lots of ways to bring on the waves. The more methods you use, the more waves. Yes, a tgp wave might treat you differently from a Yahoo wave - so much the better. How rapidly the waves follow on top of each other, very much depends on you.

That is, it depends on how fast you are bringing in new listings of one form or another. Picture the ocean, if you will, with wave after wave after wave crashing in. That's what you want. You want to build and build and build to the point where the surges are coming in constantly. You just need to keep building.

As you picture creating your own surf - creating one traffic surge after another - you can also see why it doesn't pay to go back and "fix" your old sites. I built a new site... I received thousands of visitors a day the first couple of days, but I saw perhaps 200 visitors a month later, and perhaps one or two this week.

I took what I learned and built another site. That site saw thousands of visitors that first week - many tens of thousands if you count the tgp version. Which is a better use of my time? Tweak the older site, thus affecting a few dozen visitors, or go build a new site, thus affecting several thousand?

The next time you get tired of building more stuff, picture that ocean. Do what you need to do, to keep those waves coming in. It might be listing an existing site more places or more types of places, or it might be building a new site. It might be working into a niche you haven't touched in a while. But do something to keep those surges coming.

Just keep doing what you need to do, and some day you'll be able to hit the beach and stake out your babe.
