The Weekend With Voltar went very well - but why? Let me give a couple of dungeon examples, and then I'll explain why.
Jojasa and I were in the basement at The Leather Rose Dungeon in Chicago. We were off to the side watching. There are various equipment stations, so on a busy night several things will be going on at once.
I was watching this one particular couple, because he had a large collection of whips and floggers. I have relatively little flogging experience, so I thought it might be a good time to watch and learn. With a range of floggers, you can provide quite a variety of sensations. Different leathers, length and number of falls, type of handle, balance and workmanship, all make a difference in the hands of an expert.
Judging by his "toy bag," this guy was definitely an expert. His partner was a fine looking curvy young thing in an extremely hot leather outfit. He too looked the part with his leather vest and black slacks. He had his own "whip stands," something like a hat tree.
Like any good practicioner, he took his time getting his equipment laid out and set up. He shook out and hung up literally dozens of individual floggers, carefully arranged. He clipped several to his belt. He easily took ten or fifteen minutes to get things laid out to his satisfaction.
This seemed a bit long to me, but he obviously had the right tools, with many hundreds of dollars - probably several thousand - invested in his equipment. This was a guy I could observe, and learn from.
What was the babe doing all this time? Patiently waiting. When you literally hold the whip hand, it is socially acceptable to leave the lady waiting!
Finally - finally - he was ready. She took the top of her hundred-dollar-a-piece outfit off, to present her flawless back for flogging. I don't recall precisely what position she took... because... nothing happened!
The flogging session was quite short. The whole scene took less time than he'd used in laying out the equipment! He seemed to have the wrist motions correct, and might have actually been an expert. Unfortunately, I'll never know. The scene is memorable, as "the scene that never happened." She did not stop the scene or call it short. She seemed to be liking it - but it never went anywhere.
So what in the world happened? Why did these people bother to come down to the Dungeon with hundreds of dollars of equipment, dressed to the nines? Because for them that was the scene. They weren't players; they were posers. Is "posing" a valid form of BDSM play? Of course it is!
But, for a short while, I was fooled. This couple had dressed the part. They had all the tools and toys which an extremely experienced couple would have. However, they were not to be a source of instruction to me.
Several months later Jojasa and I attended a Malicious Masquerade party in Chicago. The dungeon was in the hotel ballroom. There were a number of equipment stations set up. Again, Jojasa and I were off to the side watching. I noticed one person bring his toybag (a hardsided overnighter suitcase) over to the equipment station right in front of us.
This situation "seemed" different from the outset. His partner wasn't even right there with him. She was still across the room looking at some vendor's display. He was scouting ahead, to lay things out, set things up. He set down his toybag, and pulled out lots of stuff - wrist and ankle cuffs, chains, fasteners, rope.
Much like the first example above, this person spent several minutes getting things out and arranged. But there was a difference. This guy was making safety checks as he went. He individually fastened and checked each ankle and wrist cuff to the X apparatus. He then unfastened the cuff and chain, to lay it aside in readiness for the scene to come.
In a BDSM scene, style is important. Sloppiness is both disappointing and potentially dangerous or distracting. This guy was clearly preparing for a public scene... but this was to be the real thing. It would be real, and it would be sane and safe.
