Now Serving .. Round 2

Well we have made it to round 2 of the 2001-2002 hockey season. My favorite team made it to the second round so I still have all my hair (both head and face). They did make me sweat a bit getting there, and I'm sure this next round will be equally as exciting of a journey.

The first round was one of the most exciting series of games that I can remember. Two game seven series and only one series that was decided in five games. One major upset with the number 8 seed Montreal beating the number 1 seed Boston in six games. This series was filled with ugliness and controversy. Most every game was full of cheapshots stickwork and fights for the sake of fights. The final wrecking ball was the hit on Richard Zednick from Boston's Kyle Mclaren late in game four. Mclaren threw an elbow just as Zednick put his head down and drove for the net, them impact of the hit left Zednick on the ice motionless for five minutes until he was carried of on the streacher. He remained in intensive care for the following 2 days. Mclaren was suspended for the remainder of the series between the two teams and as it turns out the ultimate revenge was had by Montreal as they win the next two games and take the series.

Now the other coaches/GM's/Teams couldn't be left out from the controversy game. Today the NHL had the last word to say on several incidents as the laid down heavy fines totalling over $150,000. The first includes Detroit's coach Scotty Bowman for $10,000 and the Red Wings team for $25,000 for a confrontation between Bowman and a member of the Detroit Press. Bowman removed the reported from a room that is mandated by the NHl to allow press access, I guess Scotty was not happy with the play of the Wings and closed the room.

Following along in the big dollar fine parade was the GM of the Vancouver Canucks Brian Burke who was hit with a $30,000 fine for comments made to the press about the officiating during the Vancouver/Detroit series. He should have been happy with winning the first two games of the series as the Wings won 4 straight to take the series in 6 games.

$30,000 must be the going rate for abusing the officials in the media, as the NHL slapped both coach Mike Milbury (N.Y. Islanders) and coach Michel Therrien (Montreal Canadians) with this fine for their comments to the press.

The NHL boys were not yet done, as they handed down yet one more fine. Toronto Mapleleafs coach Pat Quinn was the latest to have the $30,000 fine levied against him, for yet again comments made to the media.

When will these guys learn to "shut up and play hockey"?
