Hosting and More

Code just impresses the hell out of me. I have 5 domains that I use, 3 more are parked just awaiting to be built on. One domain in particular has a lot of interlinked webpages. Then it hit me, I could just mirror the directory structure, change the root domain and populate my other domains. Rework some of my pages and submit them to the spider engines and let them crawl my domains. My problem was how to do it the smart way.

Homesite has an exteremly powerful search and replace function. The live edit feature sucks, period. So I decided to download, which I realized this was not the smart way, I gave up after 2 hrs. Voltar has mentioned more than once to do a server side search and replace. I often wonder how he accomplishes this so efficiently :) With my FTP client of choice (Cute FTP/Html) I can accomplish a lot of my webmaster tasks. It rocks for live edits, but it has it's limitations. I struggle with Unix for dummies all to often, eventually I will comprehend Unix.

I decided to call my host and become very inquisitive, not expecting the response I got at all. They were the ones that were full of questions! I explained what I wanted to do, "Pasta. we'll send you some instructions, check your email in a few". Within 20 minutes I had some details on how to write a script to do what I wanted. I called Todd back, "your kidding right", "no it's easy Pasta". I explained to Todd that I don't write scripts, I understand, execute, break and hack scripts. I don't write scripts. Hats off to people that can!

How You Doin?
This is Funny

One of the best moves I made was to move my sites over to M3, and also one of my hardest webmaster tasks to date. Within an hour I had a solution to my problem. Moving a directory and all its structure to another domain and changing the root url in all my links.

When I got home I fired up my telnet shell and loaded the script ... it didn't work. I figured it was a fast pass at my demands, something was missing, so I picked up the phone. I walked thru the script with the tech, there was a mistake, within in minutes it was completed. I now have a fully functional script to disperse 8500 webpages/doorways across all my domains each month. Yeah, it's smoke and mirrors but don't you think the potential for SE hits goes up?

What got me thinking of moving some of my pages to my other domains was a post Serge made towards the end of last year. "The most effective link swapping techniques". Automated link exchanges, they don't work. A person doesn't need extensive dbs with hundreds of sites, you only need one thing, aside from having a solid infrastructure. Finding someone you can trust and similar traffic volume, pointing BIG FAT CREATIVE TEXT LINKS at one another. Feel compelled to find the post .. start "fetching" into the archives. Start at the middle of October, you'll find it. "This is how we built traffic in the pre java days and found that dealing with PEOPLE is MORE time consuming but MORE EFFECTIVE AT THE END!" Serge :)

M3 Server and Cory Thank You!
