Gold, Silver, Bronze, Scandal

Well it's official, the Olympics are now over and done with and we can back to normal hockey whooha. It looks like my last predictions going into the semi-finals were pretty close, with the obvious exception of Canada.

I picked them to get knocked out during that round, based on they way they had played coming into the round. Well, in the end Canada took home the gold, a deserving win as they out played the U.S. in the Gold Medal game.

A great game to watch was the U.S. vs. Russia, it was a fantastic game filled with end-to-end action. Now, the action that happened after the game was a huge disappointment for me. The Russian coach Fetisov (a former member of the Red Army Russian team, and the Detroit Red Wings) made some comments after the game that just floored me. Basically he implied that there was an agreement made with the Olympic committee to have a North American final. While I guess I could see why that would have been said with all of the ugliness that happened in the figure skating competition, it's the fact of who it came from that really bothers me.

Fetisov was one of the players to break into the NHL in the first place. He challenged the Russian coaches of the old Red Army team and stood up to them in order for other Russian players to follow into the league. I was thrilled to see him get the honor to coach this Olympic team, and the players that he selected for the team (many of my favorite players are Russian). I have always had great respect for Fetisov and his accomplishments and was happy to see him win the bronze this year. Then he made those comments and that has made lose some respect for him, the comments were uncalled for. I watched the game between Russia and the U.S. and did not see any officiating that would or should have been in question. For the most part the officials let the players decide who would win the game (now the a couple of the ladies games is another story).

That is it for this week's whooha, next week we will look at how the various injuries from the games have impacted the teams around the league.
